Autumnal Blitz

Greetings everybody, both watcher and friend, both random stumbler and meat puppet! I've just returned from Dragon*Con a few days ago, and other than the car trouble which plagued us the whole week, I had a fantastic time. Good people absconded with all of my business cards! I also managed to potentially get a few commissions (big ones, might I add!) in addition to participating in a 508-person steampunk group photo and speaking on a panel about AIR.

... Oh right, I've been keeping that under wraps.

www.airsteampunk.com/

AIR is a brand-new steampunk MMORPG set for release in the next couple of years. You can read all about the setting and gameplay here on the website- which is proving to be quite exciting in its depth and charm. I was hired on by the lead writer (G.D. Falksen) and the art director (Chris Dodson), after they saw a few of my non-European steampunk designs. What you good folks don't know is that I've been drawing like mad the last two months- I just sadly cannot release my costume concept sketches to the public... which just means you'll have to play the game when it comes out!

Remember folks, I'm back at school- which means that I'm poor again! However until I move into my new place on the 20th of October, sewing commissions are sadly closed. Design ones are always open and welcome though (not to mention cheap!).

Costume Design Commissions:
Rough pencil sketch or consultation - $15
Inked rendering - $20
Watercolor and ink rendering - $30

Current Project Docket:
-Military shako and jacket for G.D. Falksen for Teslacon.
-Nativepunk for debut at Oklahoma Steampunk Exposition.
-New von Grelle ballgown for.... ? (Time and money alloting)
-New von Grelle civilian outfit for.... again, if/when I have time or money.
-Steampunk Disney Princess (Mulan), design forthcoming, set for debut at World Steam Expo.
-Scottish steampunk McLeod formal outfit for William MacLeod, set for Dragon*Con 2011.
-Naval submarine uniform for Cindy MacLeod (design forthcoming), set for Dragon*Con 2011

Events Schedule:
Teslacon 2010- Madison, WI- Nov. 5-7
ConFusion 2011- Troy, MI- Jan. 21-23
2/19 Time Machine- Ann Arbor/Detroit TBA- Feb 19
Oklahoma Steam Exposition 2011- Oklahoma City, OK- Apr. 15-17
World Steam Expo 2011- Dearborn, MI- May 27-30

Good heavens! I returned home from Renfaire practice to find my DA inbox brimming with glowing praise from all sorts of lovely folks, which does a self good after a long day pretending to be Elizabethan Eurotrash. It's nice to see the months of work I put into von Grelle are being appreciated, which I can hope everyone can feel someday upon one of their creations.

Future plans: I'm working on a new steampunk outfit after the 2010 season of the Michigan Renaissance Festival has winded down, the Eastern Woodlands Nativepunk, in addition to a few other ensembles for Vonnie.

If you'd like to meet me/Kapitan von Grelle and the other crew of the Imperial Anti-Piracy Squadron (steampedia.wikia.com/wiki/Impe…) I'll be at the following upcoming events:
Dragon*Con 2010- Atlanta, GA- Sept. 3-6 (still in the midst of confirming)
Teslacon 2010- Madison, WI- Nov. 5-7
ConFusion 2011- Troy, MI- Jan. 21-23
Oklahoma Steam Exposition 2011- Oklahoma City, OK- Apr. 15-17
World Steam Expo 2011- Dearborn, MI- May 27-30

I look forward to meeting all sorts of folks in my travels. And remember: while I cannot take commissions right now, I'm still open for costume design help (for a nominal fee) and advice (free).

A round of thanks also to :iconjcroxas: and :iconmyntkat: for nominating and selecting me, I'm utterly elated!

P.S. DO YOU LIKE VON GRELLE? (Or are you at least terrified of her?) Then vote for my entries in the 2010 Bustle Dress competition at www.bustledress.com. To vote, send an email to lisa@bustledress.com and tell her that you want entry #22, Kapitan von Grelle to win for best steampunk bustle dress. You can vote daily if you please, in which case die Kapitan MIGHT offer you amnesty.

I returned home from World Steam Expo yesterday evening and have been too shagged out too write a proper recollection of the whole thing. But all you need to know is that I had a brilliant time, met a lot of wonderful people, and it hopefully will signal a new, exciting amount of output with my art and costuming.

However, before I can work on some new steampunk outfits (including some Native American steampunk, design forthcoming!) I need to get cracking on my new Renfest gown. Between garments on that, I'll be making rosettes and hats in the interim to sell on my Etsy- I'll announce those when I build up enough of a stock.

As always, costume design commissions are up, particularly since I'll have time to do it with class out for the summer.

As always, may your boilers be hot and your head be cool.

As I posted back in December, I'm hurting for the money I need to make preparations for World Steam Expo (not to mention even attend the damned thing). So, to help scrape up the money, I'm offering up my costume design skills to you good folks! If you have a concept, need a concept, or just have no idea which patterns to use- I'm your woman... hopefully.

My rates! Now with more cheapness!
$10 - Consultation and rough sketch
$15 - Basic pencil sketch
$25- Shaded pencil sketch
$25 - Watercolor rendering w/ ink

With each sketch comes any help you might need in organizing or developing the look of your characters, because being a crazy person, characters are what I know best! Have an odd body type or worried about problem areas? I can help you find something flattering! So whether you're an airship pirate, dastardly villain, adventuring noblelady, or a psychotic wrench wench who doesn't want the typical underbust and fluffy blouse ensemble, I think I can help you design the look that's right for you.

A Whole Lotta Steampunk

Journal Entry: Tue Mar 30, 2010, 5:56 PM
Facebook l Myspace l Gallery l dA Portfolio l Watch Me l Note Me

Like the skin? It's all BloodPromiser.

Anyhue, less than two months counting until World Steam Expo, which promises to be the most high-profile convention I've presented at yet. Just the creativity I see from my friends and the information being slowly leaked by the organizers is making me giddy with antici.....

.... pation.

I'm working on four new outfits for the convention:
1. Von Grelle's Undress (Informal) Uniform- to be worn Sunday or Monday when I just don't want to take two hours to get dressed. It took some time to design, but the overall look is very swashbuckling. So far the new corset has been cut out, the coat only needs embellishment, and the new sashes are cut out.

2. Von Grelle's Swimsuit- for what is assured to be a hilarious contest. So far I've completed the three-quarter length pants, just need to make the tunic, sashes, and find a suitable hat.

3. Ballgown- I'll be unveiling the design for this soon... but be warned, it's a bit of a departure from Vonnie's usual look.

4. Poppy Q. Wolstonston- steampedia.wikia.com/wiki/Popp… She's just a character I want to drag out for fun on Friday while everyone's getting oriented. All I need to do for her is make her a new skirt and gather accessories. If you manage to find Poppy at the Expo, she'll surely give you a grand tour or trade rations with you!

Also in the works: DESIGNS! I'm running a panel called "Types and Tropes" with :iconmacaodghain: in which we teach people ways to suggest their character better through their costume, as well as how to come up with a dynamic character. Just like with the panel at Windycon, I'm making costume sketches- so if you have a character or costume type you'd like me to draw, then give me a suggestion!

Sure, I may not do drawings to a point where I could take commissions off of those, but since times are rough and scholarships don't look too certain for next year I'm whoring my imagination out.

So, while I still can, I'm taking costume design commissions. Note that I specialize in historical/fantasy/science fiction- preferably pre-1910s if you're going more period. I will do so little as helping you with line/silhouette concepts and as much as breaking down garment by garment what your costume looks like.  The basic rates:
Basic ideas consultation: eh... by donation.
Rough pencil sketch: $15
Inked developed sketch: $20
Colored and inked developed sketch: $35

Message me if you're interested. Note: Any close friends will be barred from payment... unless they want to be really nice to me.

NEW DRESS PEOPLE! I'd post my sketches and drafts, but my scanner's been busted for some time. One of these days I'll get that baby working again. Anyhue, all other sewing has been put on hold to make an entirely new outfit for Renfest this year. And not just any random peasant swag or court gown either- hell no. In my usual spirit of never doing anything typical, I'll be playing the Vulgarian (I'll explain)noblewoman named Katya Gutzzhoute.... a charming young woman, I assure you.

Vulgarians are an institution at MiRF that's being revived after a nearly ten-year hiatus. Basically you've got your gussied up, polite, hand-kissing court where the men are haughty yet noble and the ladies are meek yet smart. Yawn. Then you've got Vulgarians, who still get to dress as nice and gussied as GOOD!court but get to act rude, crude, lewd, and slavic. Mix together medieval Russia, a hint of Viking, Boris and Natasha from Rocky and Bullwinkle, and the Addams Family in a big Elizabethan pot with a pinch of Machiavelli and you've got the Vulgarians.

The dress itself is going to be black velveteen with a bodice-style top and shoulder rolls.... with spikes. The black's going to be accented with burgundy velveteen and the tertiary fabric is a diamond patterned jacquard in charcoal and silver- which I am currently beading the crap out of. Everything's either going to be trimmed in silver or the burgundy, since because I'm going to be used and abused with daily fight scenes. Little touches I'm including are a black leather studded neck ruff, a split away skirt panel so I can knee, kick, and show off my gams, and make-up that would make an early 90s goth stutter.

Speaking of which, if any of you have any suggestions for theatrical products that would help my make-up last longer on a hot, humid day or just plain awesome items I should pick up, give me a comment. If you can make it to the 2009 Michigan Renaissance Festival, I'd love to have visitors to see me possibly not fail miserably at asskicking.

Well I had a nice week off from sewing after finishing my new pride and joy for ConFusion, but a new race has begun! I leave for my Bay Area Ren Fest trip to Florida in 18 days with the scheme for a swank new Ottoman outfit.

So, my sewing table:
Ottoman ensemble for 2/19 (IT HAS SILK IN IT): Caftan- needs embellishment and finishing; Jacket- cut out, needs trimmings; Trousers- fabric needs dyeing; Undergown- fabric needs tea bath; Waist cincher- needs fabric; Hat- debating existence.

I'm debating existence of the hat, not vice-versa. Though I could always be wrong according to modern philosophy.

Victorian Bustle Gown for 5/2: Hey, I've got a rough design! img.photobucket.com/albums/v28…
Note: That is a freaking dorky hat. Not gunna do it. Debating between purple or red for the gown. I know I ALWAYS make red stuff, but it's a color that looks good on me!

List of current projects and when they are due:
1. Captain Von Grelle Steampunkery- due January 23rd for Confusion in Detroit. (Design done, gathering materials)

2. New Turkish frock for Florida hijinks- due February... sometime. (Finishing design, gathering materials)

3. Bustle gown for Victorian days- due May 3rd. (....huhwhat?)

4 Whatever the hell I feel like- whenever the hell. (?????)

Christmas presents for friends and family'll probably pop up, but I'm certain a few nights of furious sewing can resolve those.

How often does 5 yards of cotton velvet fall into your lap for more or less no charge- NEVER, which is exactly why I'm assuming this is a sign from the gods that I, Jeni, Queen of Undignified Drawing Attention to Myself, must make a court dress.

This court dress will both be a test in my ability to voodoo shit together cleanly and embellish (BECAUSE I WILL GO ALL OUT, DAMMIT) as well as the bane of my very existance. As a rule, I am not a girl who works well in gowns; I lack quiet dignity, grace, and traces of girliness that makes me fit to be any sort of courtly gal. Furthermore, the velvet is red. Usually I'd celebrate because thanks to my Amer-Indian skin tone I look good in a limited color palette- which includes most reds. Thing is, EVERYBODY makes red velvet Elizabethan dresses- and as you lieblings all know, I'd rather pry out my toenails with a dead weasel than look like everyone else- particularly at a Renaissance Festival. So this has made picking colors a nightmare as red/gold, red/green, and red/black are all overdone.

Solution: RED AND GUNMETAL BITCHES- www.silkbaron.com/silk/color.a…;

I'm still working on Luftflotte rather vicariously, finishing and adding pieces as I find bits here and there. I'm nervous to do any sort of push on it until I get the underpinnings done, and I'm waiting until my friend opens her drygoods store for that (because this sort of patience could be the difference in being able to afford making two costumes at once like this).

I start class next week, and my relatively stress-free courseload should allow for pleeenty of costuming time!

Well, ever since I finished that goddamned Luftflotte design I've been determined to get my materials together or at least hammer out a few costume components. Oh sure, I have other projects (that actually have offered to pay) that I could be doing... but um... HEY LOOK, CHEAP BUTTONS.

Thus far I've been patting myself on the back, as from the age of 14 I've been wearing combat boots as my regular everyday shoes- and where do these behemoths go when I'm done with them? My closet apparantly. I found a stash of them that I plan to harvest leather from, including toe and heel caps. I've already started making my eyepatch cut from a toe that'll be decorated with rivets and hooked up to a simple LED circuit.

But yeah, I should probably get my ass in gear for festival..

Fall semester's over, which gives me more or less a month to screw around artistically. I just might run to left field and do a painting of my sister or my dog, just because I've done so many self-portraits lately (and alas, even I tired of myself). I know I'm going to go sewing-crazy since double employee discount day yesturday yeilded a gigantic cache of fabric.

So, on that boring note: Happy Yule, Merry Christmas, (C)happy (C)hanukkah, and Kwazy Kwanza, ducks.

Seven down- 93 to go

  • Reading: Stuff on WWI
  • Watching: Brazil
  • Playing: Furc- GO QDT/Cordell!
  • Drinking: Mango Tango
Right so... routine is nice and all.. I guess. But routine is getting a tad bit sucky. Well, some less than routine ons have been going (I renewed my temp liscense, I performed in the 24 hour theatre experiment as a coke-snorting Saint, hell- I'm skipping math class to work on my history homework) but it's still a drain. I guess what I'd like it something to shake things up, a coyote blue if you will, maybe even a scanner. Because I've learned that scanners are the key to life itself, apparantly.

Umm... I need inspiration, because this list thingymabobber isn't helping. Ooh! GIVE ME MOVIE TITLES, THE MORE OBSCURE THE BETTER!

PS, found a scanner at school to make do with. Which means artsy/good pieces get scanned first, vague/smut last. Sadly.
  • Listening to: Loreena McKennit
  • Reading: My history textbook
  • Watching: The Adventures of Baron Munchausen
  • Playing: Furc- GO QDT/Cordell!
  • Eating: cottage cheese
Well, it seems my issue now isn't my internet or DA, it's the fact that my parents shelled out the cash to upgrade to a brand spankin' new WIndows Vista. Whoooot!

The issue- the drivers haven't been developed yet that can support my scanner, so until the good people at visioneer get off their asses or I can find a scanner, no art! Pity too, I went through a put-out period while my compy was busted.
  • Listening to: Men at Work- Land Down Under
  • Playing: Furc- GO QDT/Cordell!
It's winter break! But not for long...

However, I've got time/fabric on my hands so I'll be taking Hat Commissions! I'll post examples of each variety soon, as well as prices when I take a look at my stash. So just start thinking! (Hats come embellished)

Tall Hat (Best tall hat deal I know of)....
Flat Cap...
Coif/Caul...

On a second note:
DA, I hate you. You've become a snotty prick because for over three years my slow dialup connection has been just fine for submitting art- a bit sluggish but juuuust fine.
However, now that you've updated to become more sleek and sophisticated, I get an error message telling me that my browser can't support the nessicary crap to upload. So I have to ask friends to hack into my account and submit files for me.
See folks, I actually haven't been taking an art break. I have a backlog of stuff to upload, but can't.

On a third note: I GOT A JOB AT JOANN FABRICS, WHOOT!
Right, so it's break time in my first college art class, which turns out to be a digital one... it seems I'll be making 'the switchover' but worry not my traditional friends, I'm by no means giving in to the wacom.... and no offense to anyone who uses one...

I've started work at the Michigan Renaissance Festival during the weekends, and my various costume pics are displayed throughout my gallery. Come visit teh Faxi!

Things to come: Illustration work done on digital, more paintings, character drawings, who knows, maybe some actual prosework- I'm feeling wordy.

In the meantime, I need extra-character inspiration so... what everyone's favorite animal?
